Additives
Oxygenated Additives
Other Types of Additives
- Oxygenated additives can also be called oxygenators
- Oxygenators are compounds that increase the amount of oxygen available for fuel combustion
- They are hydrocarbon compounds that have 1 or more oxygens attached to them
- In order for engines to run the fuel must ignite in order to get the power that runs a car
- To ignite fuel a spark is lit inside the engine that combust the oxygen in the fuel which is why oxygen is added to fuel for easier combustion
- Oxygenators are used in order to make sure the engine doesn’t wear down as fast.
- Oxygenators are usually alcohols or alcohol related derivatives
- Newer oxygenators are also used in order to make fuels more efficient and give off cleaner emissions
- Ethanol is the most common oxygenated additive because it is an alcohol so it has oxygen which will allow it to combust, ethanol is cheap and ethanol can also increase octane levels for better performance
Other Types of Additives
- Other additives that are added to fuels are ethers, corrosion inhibitors, anti-oxidants, etc.
- Antioxidants are additives used in fuels to make sure the hydrocarbons don’t oxidize. They are used to stabilize the fuel
